Lakehill News - September 2019

Where did the summer go? And doesn’t September start more slowly than this? Everything seems to be moved up this year, and so it’s definitely time for another Lakehill News…and PDQ!

There’s Still Time To Play

Most of the travelling (U11 to U18) teams are now complete, but we are still taking registrations in a few age groups and of course we are still registering the Mini’s (U5 to U10). Now is the time to try soccer – tell your friends that if other clubs are full, Lakehill probably still has space. Visit the Lakehill PowerUp page, login and get registered!

Introducing Club Hub!

Those of you paying attention will have noticed that there are messages appearing in your home screen in PowerUp. This is Club Hub, and it’s kind of like a Facebook Wall. We are starting to use Club Hub to post information that you need to see, so we can minimize the number of emails we send out. The fastest way to access this information (and your family calendar) is by installing the free PowerUp App on your mobile device. Just look for the Mobile Apps link in the righthand side menu once you have logged in, download and install, and move into the 21st century. You can even add it to your notifications so you'll always be up-to-date. You’ll never go back!

Uniforms

Our long-suffering uniform manager is now actively hunting down U11 to U18 players to fit for jerseys. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to pull out that uniform from last year and try it on for size. If you need a new jersey and you haven’t already ordered one, better log into PowerUp and get to it! U5 to U10 – we haven’t forgotten about you – your socks and shirts will be distributed in the next few weeks (and there is nothing for you to do!)

Boot Swap

Maybe you have a great pair of boots but they are just a little snug? Or a few pairs? This Saturday (TOMORROW) we will be having our annual boot swap outside of the Braefoot building, from 10 AM to 1 PM. Bring a pair, take a pair (though hopefully we get a few pairs right at the start to fill the kitty!) Shin pads, keeper gloves, and even gently used Lakehill gear will be gladly re-gifted!

Referee Clinic

Want to make a little spare change to defer the cost of registration? How about learning to be referee? It all starts with the small-sided game. The next clinic is September 29th, hosted by Gorge Soccer at Hampton. There are still a few spots available. And for those small-sided refs looking to move up to the full field, Juan de Fuca is hosting an entry level clinic next weekend. For more details and to sign up, visit the BC Soccer Ref Centre (look for courses under Vancouver Island, Lower). And if we get enough extra demand, we might see about hosting a course ourselves in the near future.

Laws of the Game

What those new referees will be learning are the Laws of the Game, and those Laws changed over the summer. Technical Director Joshua Hart has put together a very brief primer on the biggest changes – it’s posted in Club Hub for you to review. Just log into PowerUp to find the appropriate link.

We’re Still Looking…

We still need coaches! And there is no better way to learn the game, spend meaningful time with kids, and get yourself some cool Lakehill swag while you are doing it. Ask any coach – it’s incredibly satisfying! If you have an interest in coaching, or in just learning about coaching, please drop a note to the Technical Director. Absolutely no experience necessary…and we’ll provide you with all the training you’ll need. Coach training sessions for the coming year are listed below and you can register (FREE!) for any of the courses in PowerUp:

  • U5-U8 (2012-2015) - September 9th, 6:00pm
  • U9/10 (2010-2011) - September 8th, 6:00pm
  • U11-U13 (2007-2009) - September 8th, 4:00pm

All coach training sessions will be held on the grass at Braefoot. Dress for play! A reminder that coach training sessions are mandatory for all current Lakehill coaches.

Volunteers Needed

We still need people to step up and help out. Rather than publish a list of tasks, I’m just going to say that if you are at the park in the next few weeks and you see someone doing something – ANYTHING – please offer to help. There are an infinite number of tasks at this time of year, and a very small group of people working on getting them done. And if you really do want a specific task, drop a note to our new Director of Volunteers Allison Kernan. (Her email is now set up, but she’ll still enjoy having her inbox filled!)

Season Start Dates

You’ve seen it before, and it’s on the website, but just in case you missed something, games start…

  • U14+ (Tier 2 & 3) September 7/8th
  • U14+ (Tier 4) September 14th
  • U11-U13 (all) September 14th
  • U5 - U10 (all) September 14th

Practices for all U11 and up teams will be starting this Monday night. U10 and below will start practicing the following week. The practice schedule has been posted on the club website, in Club Hub and soon it will be added to the PowerUp schedule (so all your family practices will show up in the PowerUp App!) All I need is time….

Parking

If you have been paying attention, you’ve noticed that Braefoot School is undergoing seismic remediation and because of that, most of the parking lot is fenced off. That means our overflow parking is effectively gone for the year. Please, please, please – if you can avoid driving to the park this year, do so. Bike, walk, skip, roller blade: whatever it takes to free up the parking lot. And if you must drive, please respect the club’s neighbours and don’t block driveways, park on crosswalks or yellow lines, or anywhere that is obviously a no parking zone (and that is the entire east side of Braefoot Road).

Senior Team News

We are pleased to finally welcome our adult teams into the Lakehill registration system. That means they can now get the Lakehill news…so we better give them something to read! Lakehill has a full slate of Senior teams, from the top level Premier Women and Div 1 Men, all the way through to our Over 30’s Women and ageless Over 55 Men. Most of them play evenings on Friday and Saturday night on the turf (and sometimes Sundays on the turf or at Reynolds Park). If you get a chance, take some time to watch one of their games. They’ll all appreciate your support! And word on the street is that the Over 30 Women could use a few more players this year, so if you are interested and want a good weekly run around, you can contact the team manager through the Senior Teams Contact Page.

And Finally…

It’s a crazy, crazy time of year for the TD and Lakehill Board members. So please: be respectful of their time, patient with their delays, tolerant of their grumpiness, and most of all, empathetic with their stress levels! When in doubt, follow the first habit: be proactive! That means taking the time to source your own answers to your questions (the Lakehill website has the answer to most of them). We’re working to pull together the season for almost 800 kids and 200 adults. Think twice before sending that snarky email or asking the obvious question. PLEASE. (And with that said, I will hit send on this email and await the four or five “please take me off your list” response emails, the couple of questions about when the practice schedule will be out, and the inevitable “who is my child’s coach”…).
