Next to players, Coaches are our most visible group of members. Some are trained Coaches, some are experienced players and some are just parents willing to invest some time and energy to help our players enjoy the fun, lively, outdoor activity in a team sport.
BC Soccer Coaching Courses
In light of the current situation with the suspension of on-field soccer activity, in conjunction with Canada Soccer, BC Soccer is pleased to introduce online delivery of the classroom/theory for all community coaching courses at no charge. The current offering provides online access to the theory component (part 1) for coaches wanting to start their certification process in the Community Stream. Coaches taking the online theory are able to register for the practical on-field component (part 2) when on-field soccer activity resumes to obtain their full certification. Courses are available for the following age groups:
- U4-U6 - Active Start.
- U7-U8 - FUNdamentals.
- U9-U12 - Learn To Train.
- U13+ - Soccer For Life.
Lakehill Soccer Association partners with the EPIC Academy on our development curriculum, and all Lakehill coaches are encouraged to access the coaching resources Here.
Once again, Lakehill has partnered with EPIC to offer Coach Education sessions for coaches at all levels. The courses are updated from last year, and are mandatory for all U12 and below coaches, whether you took it last season or not. Everyone that completes the coach training and signs up to be a head coach, and regularly attends Development Night will receive a $100 rebate on fees for next season. In addition, coaches U11 and above who complete the training will receive a Lakehill coaching jacket (only for coaches who didn’t receive one last season).
All Coach Education sessions are at Braefoot.
Volunteering as a Coach:
Lakehill is always looking for individuals who are interested in coaching. Regardless of your playing and/or coaching experience, we are determined to get you involved within the club and create the best environment possible for your development as a soccer coach. We have coaching opportunities to work with both boys and girls teams, from as young as Under 8, all the way up to adults.
Important: All volunteers in a position of responsibility over, or perceived responsibility over, anyone under the age of 19 is required to submit a criminal record check. This applies to Coaches, Referees, Team Managers, Executive - anyone involved with minors.
To begin as a coach, when registering your son/daughter, select the "Coach" box in the volunteer section of your child's (or your) registration. If you yourself are a player at Lakehill, are over the age of 15, and take up a position as primary coach for one of our teams, your registration fees for that year are waived.
- Existing coaches don't need to apply (however, it is important to let us know if you want to coach again).
- Anyone can apply for any coaching position.
- Recommendations for coaches are made by the Technical Committee to the Executive.
- The Executive makes the final decision.
At the beginning of the season, the club Technical Advisers and Director of Coaching will give a walkthrough of the materials we provide, and age-specific information on the format of play and expectations of players and coaches.
Road to Coaching Certification
There are regular coaching courses in our community being offered by BC Soccer, hosted by Lower Island Soccer Association. Those simply looking to begin their coaching journey and gather basic information have the options of taking courses such as "Active Start", "FUNdamentals", "Learn To Train" and "Soccer For Life". These four courses are all available free of charge in our community, due to a commitment made by Lower Island Soccer Association to mandate coach certification in the LISA district by the summer of 2015.
For those looking to take their coaching pedigree and knowledge to the next level, you must take the "Soccer For Life" course, before moving on to the "C License"(formerly the "Pre-B"). The "C License" is the first level on the certified coaching ladder, or "Coaching Pathway" where you will be assessed and graded by BC Soccer instructors, and is a Pass/Fail course.
Below is a clearer example of this coaching pathway, as mapped out by the Canadian Soccer Association.
- Active Start (U4-6)
- Fundamentals (U7-9)
- Learning to Train (U10-12)
- Soccer for Life (U13-18+)
- C License
- Provincial B
- National B
- National A
On January 1 of 2014 the old certifications in the Community Coach stream, Childrens, Youth and Senior will no longer be recognized. In order to coach at Provincials in either ‘A’ or ‘B’ cup, coaches will need to attend a ‘Soccer For Life’ course.
